The proposed scheme is to convert and restore the existing former Whitbread Brewery training building into 11 No. apartment type residential units and construct a new 3/2½ storey commercial building, fronting Abbey Street.
While at Barrett Haskins Designs, Rob Ranson’s brief was to carefully design something to enable the scheme to aesthetically sit appropriately within its Abbey Streetscape conservation area context. The residential elements are designed into and around the existing cast iron/steel frame and brick façade. The use of complimentary timber windows and doors are proposed to replace poor quality elements, providing high quality contemporary facades honestly distinguishing between the original and new building elements. The result achieves a continuous aesthetical integration of the larger scaled building into the smaller scaled terraced housing on Church Street.
